Like any other salary paying job, you don’t simply sign up and get the position immediately. Being a security guard or a security officer is no different. There are a certain number of steps and guidelines that an individual will have to fulfill and adhere to before being considered as potential security officer.
The steps themselves, however, are not overly complicated. But they still demand the care, effort and respect of any other job application.
Before you take on the road to becoming a security guard, it is important to evaluate the motivations for wanting to do so. Some people easily mistake security guards and police officers to be one and the same. However, they are two completely different lines of work despite being both related to security and protection.
The first step to becoming a security guard, with either a security agency or the federal government, is to find out if the state you are aiming to work in requires a job license. Many states do not require that you have a license to be one of the security guards, or a security officer, but it is still best that you find out.
For you to be able to apply for the license, you need to be trained and certified as a potential security officer. This, unfortunately, will cost time and money.
However, if you are able to research on local security companies, a good number of employers will be willing to pay for your training and shoulder any expenses incurred by such. Then again, some employers will simply allow you to pay off the training in installment granted you are given a license at the end of your training.
Once you gain a license, it’s now possible to get hired as a proper security guard or security officer.
There are a good number of job opportunities as a security officer. However, it is best to be one of the security guards of the in-house security agency of the local company that you’ll be protecting. The reason for this is that the pay is substantially higher and the benefits are better. But given the high demand for security guards, it is a lucrative job no matter where you go.
Follows these guide lines, and you’ll be walking amongst the best our security has to offer in no time.
